Laura has Cholangiocarcinoma, a cancer in the slender tubes that carry the digestive fluid bile through the liver. It’s a rare but aggressive form of cancer, and the prognosis for people with Cholangiocarcinoma is usually poor. Laura has undergone chemotherapy for months and has had several rounds. She was scheduled for a liver transplant, but during the workup, doctors found that the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes, making her no longer eligible for the transplant. A few weeks ago, Laura learned that the tumor in her liver had enlarged on one side while the other side had shrunk. Despite the treatment she had been receiving, the cancer found ways to spread and has now reached her bones. Laura has not been given a specific timeline regarding her life expectancy, but she has been sent home for palliative care since there is nothing more that can be done medically.
