Ms. Latoya Dickens spent 25 years and 8 months incarcerated in Georgia for taking the life of her abusive husband in self-defense. Her entire 14 year-long relationship was plagued by her husband’s controlling behavior through physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, including throughout her three pregnancies. In 1999, Ms. Latoya attempted to escape their relationship, but her husband disabled their car and prevented her from leaving. During an altercation that followed, Ms. Latoya acted to protect herself and her husband was injured, causing him to lose his life several days later in the hospital. Ms. Latoya was found guilty of felony murder in 2001 and sentenced to life in prison.
Ms. Latoya was finally released from prison on parole on September 16th, 2024. After more than 25 years of unjust incarceration, Ms. Latoya can now live among her family and friends, including her three daughters and thirteen grandchildren. But to make sure she has a successful re-entry, and that she can flourish in the free world, we are raising money to support Ms. Latoya in this next chapter of her life. All funds donated will help Ms. Latoya get back on her feet after more than 25 years behind bars, allowing her to support herself and her family and pay for living expenses including food, clothing, gas, rent, and travel to visit and reunite with her family members.
Ms. Latoya never should have been incarcerated. Now that she is free, she deserves to thrive. Please donate to her re-entry fund!
