My name is Lars Eilers, and I am raising funds for my senior thesis at the Los Angeles Film School, where I am completing a Bachelor of Science with a focus in Directing. My short film, What Now?, explores the delicate bond between a grandfather and his grandson.
The story follows Dobson, a twelve-year-old boy who must stay with his grandfather, George, while his mother is away on a work trip. George, sixty-six and quietly grappling with the loss of his wife, finds himself drifting through his remaining days with little expectation for the future. Yet, through their time together, George rediscovers purpose—offering Dobson the male role model he longs for, while in turn finding healing in their connection.
At its heart, this film is a reflection on the generational divide: the ways in which the young and old often struggle to understand each other, and the transformative power of bridging that gap. We are all living life for the first time, and perhaps the greatest gift we can offer one another—especially within family—is the willingness to listen, learn, and grow together.
