On July 11th, my dad underwent open heart surgery in Burlington, Vermont . He had 3 bi-passes, an aortic valve replacement, and an ablation. As many of you know, he ended up having a leak of blood and we almost lost him. He has had many complications along the way and has been in ICU for 2 weeks and 1 day as of today. They estimate another week yet in the ICU. When he was on the regular floor, mom could stay in with him at the hospital but this is not an option while he is in ICU. She did stay a couple of nights in the ICU waiting room but dad’s doctor told her she had to get a motel and needed to take care of herself. Hotel rooms in Burlington easily run $300-$500 per night. Unfortunately, she cannot go home because it is a 2 1/2 hour drive to Bruston, NY. She also cannot use things such as Hope Lodge (able to use if your family member is currently fighting cancer) or Ronald McDonald House (only for families of patients who are 21 or younger). The cost for motels for mom and the family that came in when we thought he was passing have reached at least $10,000. We have been fitting as many people in one room as allowed. That does not include food, gas and plane tickets for travel. They have told us it is going to be a long road and there will be more expenses the longer he is in the hospital. I know they will appreciate anything that is sent to help alleviate this unexpected financial burden. If you or prefer to send a check or contribute another way, reach out and we can guide you.
