The hardest thing to do in life is ask for help. My father-in-law, Larry G. Hoffman, is currently facing health challenges. Since November, he has basically been homebound. He was still able to care for himself, and his son Larry and grandson Brandon helped weekly on the farm. As time has passed, Larry has slowly lost mobility and has fallen several times, needing assistance to get back up on his feet. If you know Larry, I'm sure you know how stubborn he is. With family working and limited help, he laid on the floor for a couple of hours until someone could make it to him. Leaving the farm and the only place he has called home in the last 50 years, he had made clear was not an option.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago, he was barely able to stand. His son spent the night begging him to seek care. He finally agreed and was taken to the hospital by ambulance the next morning. He, at this point, was too weak to feed himself. The hospital ran tests and started PT. All medical tests came back okay. After a few days in the hospital, he was told to gain his strength back and return home, he needed to go to a skilled nursing home for rehab. This was devastating for him. His mind is still sharp, but his body was failing.
Larry had been a workaholic all of his life. He worked approximately 50 years in the tuckpointing, caulking, and bricklaying industry. He was only forced into retirement from Staat Inc. after being diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. This was his second time facing prostate cancer. He never gave up, though, and beat his cancer!
He is not giving up now either. He is doing all the physical therapy and occupational therapy in the nursing home, slowly gaining strength with his end goal to make it home. Unfortunately, Medicare coverage is expected to run out this Friday, July 25th. He is making progress daily but still needs extra time to build his strength back. His physical therapist agree, his progress is really good, but he just needs more time.
After Friday, he will either need to return home or move to private pay at the nursing home. He is not in the shape needed to go home and still needs daily PT to get him to the point he can. The daily cost to stay is $237 a day with an additional $30 copay for each PT session needed. That equals, including 2 PT sessions a day, roughly $9,000 for a month of care.
This is a huge financial burden, but we want him to get well. He wants to get well and is giving it his all! He really needs this extra month. He is also facing costs for medical devices for when he can return home, and home updates to allow him to be mobile. Plus, the cost for assistance for the in-home health care he will need.
You never expect to reach out to friends and family for financial help, but we are quickly running out of time to ensure he can stay and recover. If you can give, thank you from the bottom of our hearts ❤️. He wants to get better. We are feeling a bit hopeless at the moment, so prayers for healing and strength are appreciated.
Thank you for your consideration
