On April 15, Them officially was officially sold by our parent company Condé Nast, eliminating the only queer-specific news publication from the media giant’s glossy portfolio. In the wake of the sale, several full-time employees such as staff writer James Factora, Social Video manager Catherine Mhloyi were laid off, and long-term freelancers Samantha Riedel and Abby Monteil’s regular contributions were cut, leaving them suddenly without income. The elimination of the majority of Them’s full-time staff and long-term freelancers leaves them in immediate need of financial support to cover necessary costs such as rent, utilities, and other living expenses as they look for other avenues of employment in an increasingly tumultuous industry. It also deeply affects a largely POC, largely trans, and entirely queer staff.
This GoFundMe will help the affected members of Them stay afloat as they look for other sources of income. We deeply appreciate you!
