Racing Against Adversity Kyrees Brain Surgery Fund

Dear cherished family and friends,

My name is Kyree Johnson, and I am 24 years old. On December 11th, I faced a life-altering challenge: a severe brain aneurysm triggered by an undiagnosed condition known as arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Initially, I sought help at Huntington Hospital due to a persistent headache, but unfortunately, I was sent home after treatment. The following day, my symptoms intensified, prompting my family to rush me to Plainview Hospital for a second opinion. It was there that the grim reality unfolded: severe brain bleeding caused by three arteries in my brain hemorrhaging due to the aneurysm. I came perilously close to losing my life.

For 20 agonizing hours my brain bled before I was transferred to South Shore University Hospital. There, I spent three challenging weeks in the intensive care unit (ICU). During this time, I underwent three critical procedures, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of function in my entire left side and impaired vision. The doctors remain cautiously optimistic, but uncertainty looms over whether I will ever fully regain these essential functions.

On February 6th and 7th, I underwent 2 more intensive brain procedures.

Prior to this injury, I juggled three jobs to support both myself and my family. Additionally, I worked tirelessly with coaches and physical therapists, all in pursuit of returning to school and achieving my dreams.

My life has been deeply intertwined with sports—I've poured my heart and soul into it. Despite facing setbacks, I held a full scholarship for track at Texas A&M. However, another unrelated injury disrupted my path, leading to four years of physical therapy, conditioning, and coordination with my coaches. My goal was to reclaim my passion and build a brighter future for myself and my loved ones.

Yet, this recent injury has cast a shadow over my dreams. I fear that my aspirations lie shattered before me, and all the hard work I put into getting my life "back on track" may be in vain.

For the past 12 weeks, I've been unable to work, and there are still several more weeks of recovery ahead. As I navigate this challenging journey, I humbly seek your empathy and support. Every contribution matters, and together, we can help rebuild the shattered pieces of my dreams.

Thank you for standing by me during this difficult time. Your kindness and generosity mean the world to me and my family.

With heartfelt gratitude,
