Support Kylie and Rachel After Hurricane Helene

In July 2024, Kylie and Rachel's mom, Cheri, tragically passed away

after a five year battle with pancreatic cancer. Upon her death, she

left her house to Kylie and Rachel. When Hurricane Helene tore through

western North Carolina, not even 3 months later, it caused massive and catastrophic flooding in

the Swannanoa valley where her home was located. On the morning of

September 27th, Kylie received a picture from one of Cheri's neighbors

that showed flood waters breaching all of the homes in the cul-de-sac.

Upon inspection, water levels in the home were determined to have

reached six feet. There is significant mold growth and the entire

house needs to be gutted down to the studs and rebuilt from scratch.

Like many others in western North Carolina, Cheri did not have flood

insurance coverage on the home. Kylie and Rachel have applied for

financial assistance from FEMA, but have been denied with no option to

appeal since the house was no longer a primary residence. Because

Cheri passed only 10 weeks ago, Kylie and Rachel are not even in the

probate process yet and there is no leniency with the homeowners

insurance company or FEMA for this particular type of situation. This

has left Kylie and Rachel with full financial responsibility to gut

and rebuild the home which is a massive financial burden. The Demo, gutting and mold removal alone has been priced at 29K. They are working through this process now, how they will afford rebuilding remains a huge uncertainty.

I met Kylie as she helped me navigate my transition from residency to attending physician. She was such an amazing support for me during a really difficult time, and I am now hoping to return the favor.
