Update Thursday August 14:
We will be bringing Kyle home next Wednesday Aug 20th. We will take the rest of the week to get settled in at home and get a routine going. Then, Monday Aug 25th we have an appointment for QEEG, assessment, and we will start hyperbaric oxygen treatment. I will keep everyone posted and thank you for all the donations. I can’t wait for the 4 of us to be a family at home and I know this will be the break through Kyle needs to make more connections!
Hello, my son Kyle Ahles was in a serious life-threatening dirt bike accident at Pala Fox Raceway on April 8, 2025. After being intubated, he was flown to Rady's Children Hospital where we have been ever since. He has a diffuse axonal brain injury whereas the brain neurons have separated. There is damage on the right side of his brain where he landed but the most hemorrhaging is seen on the left side of the brain. The left side controls motor movement and language.
After 20 days in the ICU, Radys was able to get Kyle medically stable. Unfortunately, with this type of accident, he had extreme spasticity and he needed heavy opioids to control it. He was fortunate enough to be able to have his breathing tube removed on day 20 and he did not need a tracheotomy. On day 30, we were moved to the rehab wing.
Kyle is able to understand everything that is going on around him. If you tell him a funny joke, he laughs. He laughs at funny parts of a movie appropriately. He even cries at sad parts of a movie or he sees Annie, or I cry. So, we know he is "in" there and he just needs to make some connections. At this time, 125 days out, Kyle cannot talk, eat, or walk. He smiles, tracts with eyes, moves his head back and forth slowly and just recently started moving his eyebrows on command!
The main rehab Dr is baffled why Kyle is still in his current state considering how interactive he is. He gets sarcasm, and remembers old memories. He has been battling quite a few medical issues I won't mention here, but the main thing that is keeping him from coming home to heal and receive alternative treatments is a stomach issue. A young man immobile for 4 months is not able to move food through his system so we are in the process of figuring out how to feed him through his feeding tube and keep him hydrated without over filling him. We are hoping to have Kyle home by the end of August.
Once we get Kyle home, we want to get all the alternative treatments we can for him. We found a Dr in Rancho Santa Fe about 40 minutes from our house that works with cases like this. I started a gofundme as all these treatments are not covered by insurance. Here are some of the things we need help with:
- Hyperbaric oxygen chamber
- Class 4 laser
- PEMF -Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy
- Gyrostim for vertigo
- Near-Infrared Light Therapy
- QEEG Neurofeedback -brain mapping
- TransLingual NeuroStimulation -help to learn to swallow
- Transport van rental
- Medical supplies
- Rehab equipment
