Hi there! My name is Kyle Green. I am an American jazz guitarist residing in Portugal. I’ll soon be recording my quintet’s debut album, Paying Dues, and I am here to ask for your support.
I am beyond grateful to be recording this album with some of the greatest musicians on the scene. I have had the good fortune of playing and becoming friends with these guys over the last few years, and it has been a joy to write music for them to perform.
A recent write-up about the project:
Kyle Green Quintet: Paying Dues - A Reverent Tribute to Jazz Tradition
The Kyle Green Quintet, an international jazz combo with deep roots in Portugal, has swiftly emerged as a beacon of dedication to the enduring legacy of jazz. Formed in 2020, this quintet brings together a stellar assembly of musicians to interpret the original compositions of the American guitarist and bandleader, Kyle Green.
The quintet boasts an impressive roster: Kyle Green on guitar, the Portuguese saxophonist César Cardoso, the American drummer Michael Lauren, the French organist Liévin Lefebvre, and the Spanish trumpeter Ricardo Formoso. This diverse group conjures a sound that is richly dynamic and firmly anchored in tradition, while also allowing for the subtle infusion of modern influences.
At the heart of the Kyle Green Quintet lies a structure inspired by the classic organ trio—a format that gained traction in the 1950s and 60s for its ability to produce a voluminous sound from a modest ensemble. The addition of saxophone and trumpet enriches the texture with layered timbres, counter-melodies, and harmonies, creating a listening experience that is both intricate and exhilarating. Green’s compositions pay homage to the musical titans of the past while incorporating thoughtful arrangements, extended improvisations, and the intentional use of traditional jazz rhythms.
Kyle Green is a figure of considerable repute within the jazz community. An American guitarist, composer, and educator now based in Europe, Green has left an indelible mark on the jazz scene. He is the President and Co-Founder of Jazz Within, a non-profit jazz association in Portugal, the Artistic Director of the Tomar Jazz Festival, and the Maestro of the Big Bands do Tejo and OJT. His stewardship of Jazz Within underscores his commitment to the promotion, preservation, and support of jazz as an art form that enriches the economic, social, artistic, and cultural tapestry of communities worldwide.
The Kyle Green Quintet is more than just a band; it is a project that bridges the chasm between the past and the present of jazz. Through his music, Green pays reverent homage to the jazz tradition, while making it accessible and resonant for contemporary audiences. The result is a quintet that offers a fresh, invigorating, and deeply satisfying jazz experience rooted in the rich soil of tradition.
In essence, the Kyle Green Quintet epitomizes the finest in international collaboration within jazz, delivering performances that stand as both a tribute to the genre’s storied history and a testament to its timeless allure. This ensemble is an essential experience for any jazz aficionado eager to witness the ongoing celebration and preservation of the jazz tradition.
