TL;DR Help a queer/trans/disabled couple escape the American South

Hello.

My name is Kye, and my little family is facing a challenging road.

My spouse Hunter and I have been married for a little over two years now, and are currently living in Raleigh, NC. We have two dogs, Kassius and Killian, and we have been able to carve out a little life for ourselves over the past few years. We run a very small business that has helped us to get by as I have struggled with health issues and a less than ideal job market. Our plan was to remain here for a few more years to enjoy seeing our niblings grow up a little bit and save up more money before moving out west to Colorado.

Unfortunately, circumstances have forced us to change our plans. With the results of the 2024 election, we knew immediately that we would need to leave the South as soon as possible, and with the immediate attack of trans people that took place on inauguration day, we are only more sure that we need to get out of here. Both Hunter and I are AFAB nonbinary people, and Hunter has a mobility disability. So not only do anti trans bills affect us directly, so do those that restrict women's reproductive health, gay marriage, and gender identity as a protected class. Living in the South has always felt precarious, but it now feels downright dangerous.

Our current plan is to move to Northern Colorado, within a couple of hours of my supportive parents, within the next couple of months. Our lease is up at the end of March, but I may move sooner depending on how current job applications pan out. Hunter has to remain here until the beginning of May, as they are completing their Masters Degree in Library Sciences. Logistics will be up to a lot of different variables that have yet to be solidified, but we will be in Colorado by May.

This is where the purpose of this GoFundMe comes in. We have been saving everything we can in the short time that we have been preparing for this move. We have a convention coming up for the business that we are hoping will really boost our savings, but simply living is expensive. We pay over $700 a month just so that we can both have health insurance, and as I'm sure you all know, general expenses have continued to climb. We are looking at the absolute cheapest apartments we can get into in Colorado while remaining safe and accessible for Hunter, we will be downsizing and selling as much as we can, and we are going to move everything ourselves in a uhaul in order to cut down on costs everywhere we can. Still, we are aware that unexpected expenses arise.

So this is what we are asking. Simply that you take a few minutes to read our story. Words of encouragement are always greatly appreciated if you can spare them. Watching our country decide that our lives are worthless in the eyes of the government has been extremely demoralizing and honestly terrifying. Knowing people out there care about and support us outside of our core support system helps things to look less bleak.

And, of course, any donation that you can spare is appreciated beyond what I can express. I am very aware that times are hard financially everywhere, and of course a lot of aid and money is going to relief for the LA fires, as it well should. However, if you have a dollar or two to spare, and you feel inclined to help a trans couple escape the South, know that you would be helping us build the life that we have always dreamed of.
