Aloha friends and family,
My name is Mike, and I’m reaching out with love and humility to ask for kokua for my wife, Kuʻulei — the most loving and giving person I have ever known.
Kuʻulei and I have been together since the end of 2004 — over 21 years. When we first met, she was working as a telephone operator part-time for Kuakini, St. Francis, and Queen’s Hospital. Even then, she was incredibly hardworking and independent, doing everything she could to support herself and her family.
Kuʻulei is a single mother of three sons, and when we met, her boys were still young — in their teens and younger. She somehow managed to juggle raising them, working multiple jobs, and building a life with me. She has always been the kind of person who puts everyone else first. She is truly the heart of our ʻohana.
We began our life together in a small apartment on Lunalilo Street in downtown Honolulu, later moving to Kaneohe where we rented a home with the boys until 2011. In 2006, Kuʻulei applied for a Hawaiian Homestead, and in 2011 she was blessed to receive one in Kapolei, where we live today.
Sadly, over the years, my wife has faced serious medical challenges. She has lived with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat), and later suffered multiple mini-strokes. She has had blood clots in her brain twice, which has caused significant memory loss and slurred speech. Most recently, she has been dealing with painful kidney stones and currently has an open drainage tube with a bag.
Right now, Kaiser Permanente is recommending that Kuʻulei be transferred to a skilled nursing facility for continued care through February 20, 2026. Unfortunately, her insurance coverage will fall nearly one week short, leaving our family responsible for the remaining cost.
The facility charges $200 per day out-of-pocket, and we are asking for help to cover this gap so my wife can receive the care she needs during this critical time.
If you are able to donate or even share this page, our family would be deeply grateful. Every contribution, no matter the amount, is a blessing and helps lift some of this burden.
Mahalo nui loa for your prayers, kindness, and support.
With love and gratitude,
Mike and the Naniho & Fernandez ʻOhana
