My kind, giving, always smiling friend Kristina Moustakis was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer on March 24, 2022. Due to cancer and an extensive treatment plan, Kristina had to leave a job that she loves at Home Health and Hospice due to her health. Unfortunately, Kristina was the one who carried the medical insurance, so her family of four was left without insurance in these trying times. She has since needed to purchase private insurance at a hefty monthly price of $2600. Kristina has completed 15 rounds of chemotherapy. She had some hiccups with 3 ER visits, an unexpected hospitalization and delay in treatment due to complications throughout this process. However, Kristina persevered with a positive attitude every step of the way.
This October, Kristina had major surgery, a Double Mastectomy, post surgery treatment included home care nursing services and now outpatient physical therapy. The next step in Kristina’s Journey is 36 radiation sessions starting just before Thanksgiving. After that is completed and Kristina’s body recovers, she will have to endure 8 more rounds of immunotherapy infusions. The doctors anticipated 18 MONTHS of treatment if everything went perfectly. Life is not without setbacks, and it is anticipated that Kristina will need to be out of work longer than initially expected. Kristina is always there for everyone with a smile.
Through this process, she is there for her coworkers to listen to us complain about the most mundane things and support us. No matter how sick she felt, she was always there for her 5-year-old beautiful twins. She is able to collect disability, but it's a fraction of her former income, and the current expenses are beyond what the family had pre cancer. Kristina's Oncologist and Surgeon both insisted that she cannot perform her pre-cancer activities during her recovery, adding additional expenses to the family.
Kristina has hunkered down to finish her treatments and pay the medical bills already coming in, as she can with a payment plan that will take many many years to pay off. The hospital offers a 20% discount if invoices are paid IN FULL at time of arrival. As her friend, I want her to enjoy her life! Cancer has taken enough of her time from her family and friends. I’m hoping that those that can help lessen her financial strain will, and those that are unable to, thank you very much for reading this and if you pray, please keep Kristina in your prayers.
