Support Kris Garza's Battle Against Cancer

My name is Michelle Sanchez, and I am starting this fundraiser on behalf of my dear friend and coworker, Kris Garza. In March 2023, Kris received a devastating diagnosis of Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. What initially appeared in April 2022 as Bell’s Palsy was, after six months without improvement, revealed to be far more serious. A CT scan and subsequent biopsy confirmed the presence of cancer.

In May 2023, Kris underwent several major surgeries to remove the tumor, with hopes of restoring movement to her facial muscles. Unfortunately, the tumor had grown so large that it permanently damaged her left ear, leaving her partially deaf. Following surgery, she endured 6.5 weeks of radiation therapy to target any remaining cancer cells.

In November 2023, a PET scan revealed heartbreaking news: the cancer had spread to her T2 and C7 spinal bones. Given the rarity of this cancer, her doctors had few treatment options beyond additional radiation. In May 2024, Kris underwent radiation treatment targeting the spine. However, a follow-up PET scan in early August delivered more devastating news—the cancer had not only persisted in the original areas but also spread to her sternum, right hip, lower back, and pelvis.

Despite these setbacks, there is a glimmer of hope. Kris recently learned she qualifies for a clinical trial, which will begin on September 23, 2024. This trial will last as long as her body can tolerate it and its effectiveness against this cancer. This trial offers the possibility of shrinking the tumors and slowing their spread.

Kris, a widow and the sole provider for her family, has fought tirelessly while working two jobs to support herself and her loved ones, all while battling cancer. As she embarks on the biggest fight of her life, she will be unable to work. My goal with this fundraiser is to help alleviate the financial burden, so Kris can focus on her health and recovery without worrying about bills. The funds raised will go towards covering essential expenses, such as bills, groceries, and any healthcare costs not covered by insurance.

For those who know Kris, you know she is hardworking, deeply caring, and fiercely loving. She is a mother to four amazing children and a grandmother to three beautiful grandchildren. Kris is ready to fight for her life, and now it’s our turn to rally around her in support.
