Hey Y'all,
This is very awkward for us to do, but here we are.
Our Kolby baby has been hospitalized since Saturday, Feb 22.
On Wednesday, we went into urgent care after I noticed an open wound on his sheath. Neither the vet nor I could confirm it was a snake bite, and Kolby had NO symptoms. He was treated as an outpatient, given a cone and antibiotics, and sent home.
On Saturday, after running errands, we came home to blood, blood everywhere. It was a nightmare. Kolby had gotten a bloody nose (how? No one knows). It bled for an hour while we tried several remedies to get it to stop and contacted the vet.
Hayden took Kolby to the emergency vet while I attempted to get all the blood out of the carpet, the grout, and concrete, as well as off of the tile, walls, and windows.
Kolby was immediately admitted due to the duration of the bleed. He had blood work done that baffled the vet so much they ran it again. His blood work was really baffling. His blood was showing that he was fighting something and unable to clot.
So first they administered a plasma transfusion ($700+). Unfortunately, that proved useless. They circled back around to the wound from Wednesday (now healing and "looking great" - the vet) and said antivenom is worth the attempt considering what we know. Even though there wasn't much pointing to a snake bite (NO, I did not and have not seen a single snake in the 2 weeks we've lived here). So at about 3 am Sunday morning, antivenom ($952 for the first vial) was given. At 9 am, we had good news: his blood work was trending in the right direction and now within safe limits, and he is able to clot! Yay!
Unfortunately, at 2 am Monday morning, we were updated that it seems the antivenom has worn off per the blood work. A second round of antivenom ($500+/vial after the first) has been administered.
UPDATE: 2.24-730am confirmed snake bite. Antivenom is working. He is alert and eating. A little blood in urine, but otherwise doing great!
He could be held for up to 48hr to ensure his bloodwork stays within range, if it continues to fluctuate we will have to administer another round of antivenom.
And now we have to take our finances into account and ask ourselves, "How much more antivenom, interventions, and hospital duration can we afford to save our Kolby?" And that led us to this GoFundMe.
We are asking you, our 'Village,' to help us save Kolby!
He is Alaina's first dog ever! He is a certified Therapy Dog who goes to nursing homes, libraries, hospitals, etc.
Please pray for him and share this! Every thought, prayer, and penny helps.
These funds will assist in covering the vet bill.
