Sweet Darling Kokomo is one of The Beach Boys trio litter and has been fostering with us through Greenpoint Cats since June of this year, with his brother and sister, Barbara Ann. He is a ridiculously happy kitty—a gentle, curious, adorable monkey that has deeply enjoyed springing around the apartment learning about cat life.

His alpha brother was recently adopted, and it seemed like Koko decided to take on that role a bit more in his absence—finding inventive ways onto surfaces, becoming more explorative, generally being a big brother in charge…

Last week, while Koko and Barbara Ann were playing as they regularly do with one another, we heard a YELP! and noticed him limping around immediately. At first, we thought he probably tweaked his leg in a funny way, but when the limp did not improve, we brought him to be seen. X-rays confirmed a severe fracture at the top of his femur, unfortunately requiring surgery.

In true classic cat fashion, amidst a chock-filled holiday week, Koko was squeezed in by the incredible team at VERG for this urgent procedure to begin his recovery and healing. He did wonderfully in surgery and is back at home.

His recovery process involves about two weeks of close confinement in order to prevent too much movement, followed by another several weeks of controlled activity while he regains muscle strength and full usage of his leg again.

I’m sure many of you are aware of how daunting it is to deal with medical issues with pets, especially emergencies and unexpected situations like this, at the times that also feel like the worst. We’ve set up this fundraiser to help offset the cost of his surgery on behalf of Greenpoint Cats, the rescue agency from which he came to us as a foster. They do an exorbitant amount of work saving kitties like Koko from extreme situations and finding their forever homes.
