We've received devastating news. Kodie, my partner, has been diagnosed with Sacrum Chordoma, a rare form of cancer affecting her lower spine. This tumor, a conventional subtype, has reached a significant size, spanning from her S1 to the bottom of her sacrum, measuring 3.27 x 3.82 x 2.68 inches.

The medical team at Froedtert Hospital Clinical Cancer Center has outlined a challenging road ahead. Kodie will undergo a complex, two-day surgery, totaling approximately 18 hours minimum, requiring the expertise of five surgeons. It will take place starting May 15th, 2025. This procedure involves meticulously removing the tumor, including affected bone and nerves, with the goal of preventing further spread. A prolonged hospital stay of at least a month is anticipated, and that is under ideal conditions.

The impact of this surgery will be life-altering. Kodie will face permanent changes in bladder and bowel function, and will require mobility aids, such as a cane or walker, indefinitely. While we hope to preserve some function in one leg, a full return to even limited mobility is projected to take up to two years. Additionally, I’ll need to make our home accessible by installing ramps.
