Update 2/1-
It has almost been one week since Koa came home from the hospital, and my heart is so full. Watching him settle back into his favorite spot on the couch has been the best medicine for both of us. He has gotten his appetite back and is drinking lots of water!
We are taking it one day at a time and thankful for each day. We have a visit with his primary vet on Tuesday to retake his blood work and see where his numbers are at. This will show how his liver and kidneys are healing!
Thank you all for the check-ins, positive energy and love during such a scary week—it truly meant the world to us!

Respectfully,
Asad, Ash and Koa

Update 1/28
Koa made it out of the hospital after a week of intensive care where total costs exceeded $13,000. Although Koa is fully insured the concern lays in the hands of the company’s determination for pay out (if any). With that, I will be leaving the fundraiser active until 2/2. I want to emphasize that all remaining funds after insurance determination, will be utilized in a “pay it forward” effort. Supporting veterinary staff and any other beloved pets that deserve a fighting chance. Thank you to each and every one of you for giving and sharing Koa’s story. The amount of gratitude felt is overwhelming but a true testament to our friend, Asad- the ultimate giver.

Our dear friends beloved dog, Koa, has spent the past week fighting for his life after being diagnosed with leptospirosis, a serious bacterial infection that attacks the kidneys and other vital organs. What started as sudden illness quickly became a medical emergency, requiring hospitalization, intensive treatment, and constant monitoring.

Koa’s journey to our friend, Asad was remarkable. He was rescued by Mutts and Runts Rescue on Christmas Eve from California, where he was facing euthanasia. His past is uncertain, but he experienced neglect and likely abuse. Despite this, Koa’s spirit is strong — so much so that his new adopter Asad, flew from North Carolina to Reno to bring him home, driving across the country to give him a second chance at life.

While we did get good news today being that Koa might be able to come home tomorrow,
he faces severe kidney injury, and while he does have insurance, payout is not guaranteed. And the cost of emergency and specialty care — hospitalization, diagnostics, medications, and potential advanced treatments like dialysis — has quickly added up… exceeding $10,000.

We are starting this fundraiser to help cover:
• Any costs not covered by insurance
• Hospitalization, medications, and diagnostics
• Advanced kidney support, including dialysis if recommended
• Any remaining funds will go directly to supporting the incredible veterinary team providing Koa with round-the-clock care

Every donation, no matter the size, helps us continue fighting for Koa and gives him the best chance at recovery. If you can’t donate, sharing this fundraiser also means the world to us.

Koa has already overcome so much in his short life — now, with your help, he has a fighting chance to survive and thrive in the loving home he deserves.
