Little Kito is a 16-year-old Pomeranian that had a recent trauma to his esophagus. He was found shaking, unable to eat or drink, and brought to the ER. They said he was deteriorating fast, with only 77% oxygen saturation when he first arrived. They were ready to euthanize him, everything was moving so fast. We decided that even though he is a senior dog, he is overall healthy, so he deserves to be treated and not put down! The cost of treatment has been climbing as they were having trouble figuring out what was going on with him since all his organs were good, especially his lungs, but he was still heavily relying on oxygen support. Finally, they found out he had a big hole in his esophagus and had to undergo an immediate, highly risky surgery with only a 50% survival and chance of recovery. They would have to crack open his ribcage and pull his esophagus through his stomach to patch it up. He amazed us all by making it through the surgery for a dog that’s 80-100 years old in dog years. He has the determination and willpower to keep living. But the road to recovery is difficult and complicated. He will have to be fed through a feeding tube through his stomach, routine ballooning of his esophagus to prevent strictures, and do physical therapy to walk again.
