Update: 3/3/2026
Kirk and Katie are home. Due to complications with the transplant, the kidney had to be removed.
Despite the unfortunate circumstances, Kirk doing a lot better, but not a hundred percent. Kirk started back on dialysis at 5 this morning and will be back on dialysis for 3 to 4 months, since the first kidney transplant failed. Once Kirk has healed up from the multiple major surgeries he had to have over a short time span, he will be put back at the top of the list for first call and try it again.
Kirk was diagnosed with kidney failure at the end of 2019. He has been on dialysis since his diagnosis, and it has been a very challenging road for Kirk and his family. They have fought a hard fight and made sacrifices in many ways, just hoping they would get the call for a kidney transplant.
After nearly 6 years of being on the transplant list, Kirk finally got the call for a kidney transplant on January 20th!! They did the transplant on January 21st and while there has been a few moments of unease, Kirk is doing well, taken off of dialysis and the kidney is working. Kirk will remain in the hospital in Dallas for the next several weeks (at least 6 weeks, but it sounds like it could be longer) being monitored.
Katie is the only one working right now, but being away from home to stay with Kirk, makes it impossible for her to work. Kirsten is a junior at Waskom high school. She’s at home still going to school, working at a vet clinic, and taking care of her show pigs and show lamb.
With medical bills and feed bills piling up, paired with the time away from each other, and Katie not being able to work, this family could use all the love, help and support they can get.
