Support Kira's Fight Against Stage 4 Cancer
Donation protected
Cancer is costly. So much more so than anyone realizes before being faced with it.
About one year ago, my then 39 year old daughter, Kira, was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer that had metastasized and spread to lungs, lymph nodes, and bones. She was working as a nurse and had an extremely healthy and active lifestyle. Besides the fact that she is younger and stronger than the majority of cancer patients, she also has a LOT to live for.
Kira’s husband, Nic, is an active duty Marine with 22 years service. He has been loving and supportive for the duration of this illness. The Marine Corp gave him compassionate leave for the first part of Kira’s treatment, but he has now returned to full-time active duty. Throughout Nic’s military career and multiple deployments, Kira has faced every challenge that has come her way with strength, positivity, and grace.
Kira and Nic have two daughters and a son who they are trying to insulate as much as possible from the upheaval as they continue with their high school and college lives.
She wants to live. Short term goals include going to her son’s football games and watching her daughter as captain of the high school cheerleaders and enjoying her life. Next spring, God willing, she will get to see lacrosse games, prom, and graduation.
Kira wants to beat this disease so that she can finish raising her kids. She wants to hear their noisy sleepovers going on. She wants to worry about them when they come in half an hour late. She wants to hold her husband’s hand when the kids aren’t looking. Sometimes even when they are looking.
Nic works hard and tirelessly, but he can’t do it all. The financial pressures of cancer treatment have taken a huge toll. With her illness, she is unable to work so they have lost that income, which they depended on. Our entire family is doing all that they can.
Being Kira’s father is one of the greatest gifts I have been given in this life. She and I can look at each other and know instinctively what the other is feeling. Her resilience and ever-present kindness have inspired me for her entire life. And those traits continue on despite the cancer. There are many days when she shows the rest of our family how to be strong and positive.
Now, Kira’s oncologist is recommending further options for comfort and life-extending treatment. However, these will be entirely out-of-pocket.
Asking for help is one of the hardest things our family has ever done. We value self-reliance and hard work, but now we have to ask for help for my daughter to continue to fight for her life. Please help with any money you can and keep Kira and her family in your prayers.
