Support Kim Schneider's Recovery

On February 20th, Kim Schneider’s life changed in an instant. While driving home after attending a fish fry with her friends, Kim was hit by another driver. Her car was totaled and Kim was rushed to University Hospitals where she spent three weeks in critical condition in the Trauma ICU. During that time, she had seven major surgeries: repairing a broken femur and wrist, and five additional procedures to repair severe internal bleeding in her abdomen.
Now, Kim is looking at spending at least 4 weeks in rehab as she learns to walk, write, type and even get in and out of bed on her own. As a dedicated caregiver for the Cleveland Clinic and a writer and journalist for nearly 20 years, her career and livelihood depends on her ability to relearn these skills. She’ll need extensive in-home health care, physical therapy and occupational therapy when she’s able to return home. She’ll also need medical supplies that include ostomy equipment, mobility aids and assistive tools to help her regain her independence — much of which won’t be covered by her insurance.
Before the accident, Kim was committed to walking 10,000 steps a day and kept that streak going for 2 1/2 years. She’s always been someone who pushes herself, shows up for others and finds joy in life’s simple moments — whether attending her neighborhood book club or trying out new restaurants with friends. Now, she needs others to show up for her.
Additionally, her mother, Donna, has traveled from Florida to be by her side and help her through recovery, leaving behind her husband to care for Kim during this critical time. Without a car, she’s relying on the kindness of others for transportation, groceries and daily needs. Kim’s brother, Tim, and his family have also been by their side helping out and offering support.
The road to Kim’s recovery is long — likely 10 to 12 months, with more additional surgeries to repair her abdominal wall, reverse an ostomy and partially amputate two fingers. If you’re able, your support can help ease the overwhelming financial and emotional burden that comes with these significant changes.
All donations will go toward medical bills, rehabilitation, in-home care and essential supplies. Acts of kindness — whether through giving, sharing this page, or helping with everyday needs — will make all the difference in helping Kim move forward one step at a time.
