Hello All,
December 2020 ended with myself and my siblings losing our mother to cancer. I knew I was not feeling 100% during this time, but I decided to deal with it when I got back home to Fort St. John (FSJ), BC.
Unfortunately, 1.5 days after arriving home to Fort St. John and feeling worse, I had to call the ambulance at my siblings' insistence. After a few days at the hospital, it was discovered that I have stage 4 ovarian cancer. This is when living alone and many miles from family becomes prominent in your thought process.
FSJ did not have the specialists to deal with me, and so I was sent via air ambulance to Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), where they have the specialists and could run all of the necessary tests.
I have been transferred over to the BC Cancer Agency for treatments and, eventually, surgery. I am currently staying at the Jean Barber Lodge for cancer patients close to the treatment centre. My family will have to fly to FSJ to pack up my apartment for the end of February and have my items shipped to Vancouver for this temporary relocation. In Vancouver, I will have to get an apartment to live in and continue treatments. The cost of accommodations in the lower mainland is quite high.
As you know, unexpected living expenses, housing, relocating, and medical can be costly, and I believe my travel medical covers only 1 week of accommodations which means that my housing costs have doubled during this period of time.
My journey to recovery will be a long one, and I appreciate any help that you can offer during these times. It is not an easy journey, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Stay positive.
Regards,
Kim Coddett
