Myself, Sue and Susie are friends and colleagues of Kim Thomas. We are heartbroken by her families story and felt we needed to step in and help them out. We’ve travelled her journey and shared her heartbreak. She never asks for help but is always first to help others. This is our time to help her and her family. This is her story:

After five long years of hope, heartbreak, and determination, Kim and David finally welcomed their beautiful son, Rylee, into the world on 1st August 2025.

Their journey to parenthood was anything but easy. They endured 5 long years of IVF, with nine unsuccessful transfers and multiple miscarriages before their miracle arrived on the tenth attempt. Along the way, they invested everything emotionally, physically, and financially. They have spent well over $100,000 in their dream to become parents. At one stage, they were told they had less than a 5% chance of falling pregnant.

They never gave up and Rylee is here because of that strength.

What should have been a joyful and peaceful time as a new family quickly became something very different.

Just before Christmas 2025, David attended a routine check-up. What initially seemed precautionary led to further testing, and he was soon faced with devastating news: metastatic lung melanoma that is inoperable. He has since begun immunotherapy, facing an uncertain road ahead and the possibility of significant side effects.

At the same time, Kim made the incredibly difficult decision to return to work early from maternity leave to help ease the growing financial pressure. Juggling work, a newborn, and the emotional toll of David’s diagnosis has been overwhelming.

Then, just when things couldn’t feel heavier, another blow came.

Only weeks ago, Kim was diagnosed with kidney cancer following what was meant to be a routine check-up. She is now preparing for surgery, facing her own health battle while caring for her family.

This young family, who fought so hard just to begin their life together, are now navigating two cancer diagnoses, a newborn baby, and an unimaginable emotional and financial burden.

Kim has always been someone who gives to others. As a dedicated theatre nurse, she has spent her career caring for people in their most vulnerable moments. She has also passionately and emotionally volunteered her time supporting bowel cancer awareness through Rotary, fundraising after losing her father to the disease, and continues to support her own mother living with dementia.

Now, it’s time for us to support her.
