Kiah Hughes has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. At 49, a loving wife and devoted mother to three boys, she is young for such a diagnosis and stands a decent chance of survival. However, treatment for this will be long and arduous. We anticipate that she could be battling this disease for a year at minimum. Though we hope for the best, we’re trying to prepare as best as possible to beat this thing.
Kiah has been a dedicated preschool teacher for over 21 years but will not be able to continue working through this time of treatment and recovery. Her immune system is and will continue to be severely compromised. As much as she loves her little students, she cannot risk regular exposure to the colds and stomach bugs they generously share. She will most likely be too weakened and compromised by the chemotherapy to start any other type of work either.
As many are likely aware, a family’s expenses these days can rarely be covered with a single income. Even on two incomes, it’s a struggle to make ends meet. This is why, for the projected length of Kiah’s treatment, while she is unable to work, we are seeking assistance to keep our home, pay utilities, and continue to put enough food on the table.
