Khai is my son, and he’s been fighting bone cancer for nearly a year. His journey began with pain in his right knee, which led to his initial diagnosis. After ten months of chemotherapy, a rotationplasty, and lung surgery, we hoped he’d have a chance to recover. But just two and a half months after finishing treatment, Khai developed acute lung fluid and had to be airlifted by helicopter to Children’s Hospital Colorado’s main campus. There, he endured a nine-day stay with a chest tube. As soon as he was discharged, we had to fly him to Boston Children’s Hospital for emergency care, hoping for new options. Now, Khai is facing palliative care and more chemotherapy to try to control and shrink a large tumor in his right lung. We’ve sought a second opinion, but the outlook remains the same.

The costs of this journey are overwhelming. We’re a family of five, and the high cost of housing near Boston Children’s Hospital, rental cars, our mortgage at home, food, and travel expenses are adding up quickly. We want to focus on supporting Khai and making sure he’s as comfortable as possible, but the financial strain is immense.

Khai is an incredible kid with a big imagination. His Make-A-Wish dream is to start a trash-picking robot dog business, inspired by the amazing robots at Boston Dynamics. He was looking forward to visiting Colorado State University and working with companies to bring his idea to life. Now, we’re hoping Boston Dynamics might bring their robot dog to visit him and share in his vision.
