My name is Khai Phan. I was recently presented with an opportunity to travel to Nairobi, Kenya to work, explore, and learn. To do this, I need to raise funds to cover my airfare, accommodations, supplies, and the safari; my goal is to raise $6,200.
To make this dream trip come true, I need your support to get me there. It is 9528 miles from Ukiah, California to Nairobi, Kenya. My fight leaves June 16th at 11p out of San Francisco, California where I will be traveling for over 15 hours!
I am so lucky to already have connections through my friend Antony that will get me up close and personal and give me a genuine experience of what Kenyan life is like. Through my connection, I will get to spend several days working at an orphanage, at schools, and to participate in family rituals. Who knows, this experience could be life changing and could give me new friends that will be in my life forever, maybe even open doors for my future.
The grand plan is to first go on a safari with Antony (pictured on the right) where I will see the most amazing animals, awesome sunrises, sunsets (since I will be on the equator) and meet other explorers. Meeting native people and going to a real Maasai Village. Then, I will be going to an orphanage and schools to work, observe, and tour with Antony. Antony will then show me how life was like for him when he was a kid. Lastly, Antony promised me a big party with his family and friends to experience Kenyan traditions and real Kenyan food- a big roasted goat.
One of my main goals is to engage in a cultural exchange where I will share with the kids what a typical day of being a California teenager is like. I will play games with them, teach them my favorite sports (basketball, football, soccer), and show them my favorite card games (GIN, slapjack, go fish, UNO). I will then learn from them what it is like to be a kid in Nairobi. I will have them teach me what their favorite sports and games are. If I can, I would like to set it up to where they can be penpals with other Ukiah kids. As a California teenager, reading the DIARY OF A WIMPY KID was a childhood classic. I plan to bring this series along with other books to share and read with them.
Donations can be made to my GoFundMe page or by contacting me directly. You can also hire me for work. I am especially good at landscaping, basic construction, chainsaw/pull saw, gutter clean out, demolishing, dog walking, house sitting, moving, and more.
I currently am working at an auto repair shop and do side jobs with various people to save more money. I am asking you to donate to help offset the costs of the trip.
