By Vicki Allen: 14 years ago, I came to LA to provide care for Elizabeth Teal, born with down syndrome, she lived to age 33. During that time I met one of her girlfriends, Keysha, a special needs young lady. Keysha's family the Atkinson's soon “adopted" me into their lives while I assist Keysha. Keysha's mom, Mariam is like a "favorite aunt" and father Robert a protective, loving dad. On February 17 Robert had a typical morning with a drive to the grocery store and home. (Mariam does not drive). He came home, to the apartment he loved so much, sat down, slumped over and died from a heart attack. Robert Atkinson was age 78 & married to Mariam for 53 years. This family like others I have the privilege and passion to provide care to struggle to live and make ends meet. He loved this apartment, and my goal is to do whatever possible to raise funds. Roberts income seized at his death, and Miriam has scarce income. The money collected will be used for rent and utilities. The rent is $2795 a month. We utilize the food bank weekly for groceries. a move for Keysha to somewhere else could throw her into a tail spin. This is a huge concern for mom. Transition is always difficult for the special-needs population. The family lives in a safe neighborhood with people who care. I am counting on Friends & Family to please find it in your heart to assist Keysha and Miriam to the goal of staying in their apartment. Robert Atkinson was a giant gentle soul, Keysha and dad had a very special dad daughter bond. She would call him "daddy" and they were "buddies". Grieving is so difficult for all of us, in the special-needs population, it is even more challenging as they emote with limited comprehension. Anything you can give is appreciated at this time!!!!!
