VA delays stole his time — help us bring him home

He fought for his country. Now Sgt. Kevin Lee Lloyd — a decorated Marine, father of three, and burn pit survivor — is fighting stage IV cancer. After weeks of VA delays, mismanagement, denial of care, and retaliation for speaking out, he finally got his first chemo. We’re racing to bring him home to his children and give him a chance at more time.

I am Kevin’s former spouse and the mother of his three sons. Since June 2023, Kevin has been inpatient, and I have left my entire life behind to care for him because when he needed people most, everyone else abandoned him.

Sgt. Kevin Lee Lloyd, a decorated U.S. Marine Corps veteran, served three tours during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Like so many from his era, he was poisoned by toxic burn pit exposure, causing Stage 4 service-connected colorectal cancer that has now spread to his brain.

Kevin’s chemotherapy — treatment that could give him precious months — is ready and waiting at MD Anderson Cancer Center. But the VA has delayed payment of the $30,351 treatment cost, even though the PACT Act guarantees his care.

These delays, along with repeated mistreatment, gross negligence, denial of timely care, and the VA’s refusal to act with urgency, have left him in a critical state. They misrepresented his condition to outside providers, stalled necessary referrals, and pushed for long-term institutional placement instead of life-extending treatment — actions that robbed Kevin of valuable time and stability.

We tell our children, “Once a Marine, Always a Marine” and “We never leave a man behind.” But Kevin has been left behind.

I’ve had to stop working to be at Kevin’s side full-time, and we’ve had to hire a live-in nanny so our children can attend school and have stability while I care for their father. Our family has been displaced hours from home, living at the Fisher House so Kevin does not die alone.

Our three boys — two with lifelong medical needs — are watching their father be failed by the very system he fought to protect.

How Your Donation Supports Our Family

Your support will directly help us stay together and ensure Kevin’s final days are filled with dignity and care:

• Temporary housing and travel expenses while displaced from home

• Loss of income while I provide full-time care at Kevin’s bedside

• Childcare and living costs for our three sons, including food, school needs, and medical support (one child has Type 1 diabetes)

• Salary for a live-in nanny so the boys can have stability while I care for Kevin

• Cost of a caregiver for Kevin who will require around the clock care if he gets to go outpatient for clinical trials. The VA will not cover this.

• End-of-life and funeral expenses

• Out-of-pocket expenses for chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments the VA is refusing to cover

• Legal and administrative costs to secure the benefits Kevin earned and correct his military retirement status

Kevin is currently unable to manage his own affairs due to his condition, and with his full consent, I am helping coordinate and disburse funds on his and his family’s behalf. Funds will be managed by my partner Bryan Angelo. He is my best friend and a crucial part of Kevin's support team managing Operations and Communications so I can stay by Kevin's bedside.
