Just after graduating with his Bachelor's degree back in May, Kevin started experiencing symptoms similar to those he had before his first back surgery in 2021. His sciatica had become inflamed making sitting/standing/laying down/existing unbearable. The past two months have been nothing but back and forth with the medical system and countless trips to the Choctaw Nation Health Clinic in Idabel, OK. After they determined it was a 13mm herniation in his lumbar spine, the Choctaw Nation denied funding his surgery because he does not live within the reservation. This really threw a wrench in things as he does not have health insurance and they were our only hope. After a couple of sleepless nights, we decided to take him to the ER in hopes they would be able to at least treat his pain until we could follow up with his orthopedic surgeon. They ordered a MRI, a neurosurgeon saw enough to admit him and perform emergency surgery the next day. A discectomy was performed where they removed the herniated disc material and tried not to disturb his scar tissue from his laminectomy surgery in 2021. Luckily everything went super smooth and he is so far not experiencing any complications.
That being said, this has been completely funded out of pocket and drained his savings for grad school... He has begrudgingly decided to medically defer to recover and gather funds to attend Baylor on the fall of 2025. The funds we are asking for will cover his medical expenses for his follow up appointments and start his college fund once again for next year.
