My name is Kevin Troope and a little over a month ago, I was diagnosed with head and throat cancer. It started with a lump in my neck that I was concerned about, which was not shrinking or going away. After two biopsies, it was determined that the diagnosis was cancer. With some fear and worry, I have decided to fight this head-on (pardon the pun) and start treatment as soon as possible.

I will be undergoing seven weeks of radiation, five days a week, and seven weeks of chemo, one day a week. I am fortunate in that the hospital where I will be undergoing treatment is where I work. I am a veteran and work at the Bronx VA hospital. While this has given me some solace, my concern is the amount of time I will be unable to work. I am fortunate and blessed to have coworkers and colleagues in the medical field, particularly at this hospital, who have offered unwavering support and are always available to answer questions, just listen, or give advice.

I started the radiation on August 14, 2025, and it made my diagnosis that much more real. I am grateful for the support of friends and family and my super supportive partner.

We are a family with one income, and I fear that I may not be able to keep up with some of my finances. This includes, but is not limited to, living expenses like rent, groceries, utility/household bills, medical expenses, and any other unforeseen expenses that may come up along the way.

I'm not sure how long I will be out of work, but I'm hoping I'll be able to return to work sooner rather than later, although I know I need to take this time to heal, recuperate, and get well.

I will provide updates on my health throughout this process and let you know how your contributions are helping me on this journey of beating cancer. I am eternally grateful for the support I've received thus far and appreciate you taking the time to hear my story. I am humbled by this experience and am thankful for the love and support and for your consideration.
