Every one of you is on this website at this time because Kevin Elston…or THE Kevin Elston, as he has been called…has crossed your path for some period of time. Whether it be a lifetime, for ten years, or even just for ten minutes, there is no doubt that your life was changed for the better by knowing him.
Since the day I was lucky enough to marry this man, it became clear to me that there was not one circumstance he did not make easier, less stressful, and definitely more joyful (unless the Giants were involved). Whether it be dancing in the kitchen before school or taking Benjamin to buy a bike at Target…the bike that Kevin himself rode to the checkout counter.
As I write this now, it appears that our lives, in just one short week, have forever been changed…
Thursday, October 30th~Kevin left work, stopped by the grocery store, bought me some yellow roses for no reason, and came home. He stumbled in the kitchen that night but chalked it up to not having been feeling well for about a month.
Friday, October 31~Kevin fell over completely when he leaned down to pet our dog Calvin.
New Milford Hospital ED and their wonderful team were our first stop.
When the MRI confirmed a suspected Glioblastoma, we were transferred together by ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital, but not before Kevin stood up out of the stretcher and hugged Dr. Koobation (his ER doctor), telling him that he was so sorry he had to deliver such terrible news. Our family gathered around us in prayer, and off we went on Halloween night to the Yale NH ED under the care of Dr. Jennifer Moliterno and her remarkable team.
Tuesday, November 4 ~ Dr. Moliterno performed a burr hole biopsy of the tumor. She had carefully and compassionately explained to us that this particular “High grade Glio” was basically inoperable due to its location in the right Thalamus region of the brain. A very deep and vascular space. An open craniotomy and resection could lead to an unpredictable post-operative bleed and subsequent paralysis….to which I had said, “I don’t care if he is paralyzed as long as he is alive” …Kevin quickly replied, “ummm, I don’t exactly agree to that.”
Onto the next treatment option…
Monday, November 10~ MRI Guided Laser Ablation (LITT procedure) with the dynamic and capable Dr. Randy D’Amico at Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC. Kevin emailed Dr. D’Amico at 3 am the day of surgery …”Lasers Blazing…I am ready, I put myself in God’s hands, and in yours….let’s burn this bitch up in its crib.”
Dr. D’Amico was in fact able to “burn up” approximately 70% of the tumor, thank God.
Tuesday, November 11~ Kevin is recovering from two brain surgeries in one week while we focus on researching all of our options and getting the best team in place to continue to destroy this tumor. This includes “standard of care” treatment with targeted radiation therapy and chemotherapy, and also seeking enrollment in clinical trials, including a Phase 3 trial out of Lenox Hill to help arrest the tumor’s growth and deliver targeted therapy via arterial administration.
Going forward~
Kevin Elston is a vital force in this world. We are not at all interested in letting him go. His prognosis may be daunting but he WILL NOT be defined by that. He is a remarkable man, an amazing, intuitive and loving person. November 11 would have been our two-year anniversary of daily cold plunging…in our outdoor home tank …breaking through the thick surface of the ice to submerge, or walking into the Atlantic Ocean on a 12-degree day. We missed our days this week because of this damn tumor interruption, but I assure you Kevin will not miss much more.
We have become aware of alternative therapies that we very much wish to avail ourselves of alongside the standard of care treatment. There is an immunotherapy vaccine trial in Germany, and there is a healing body of water in Lourdes, France, that is waiting for us. We will not give up.
Even if they tell us that there is a 1% chance of surviving this G*%damn F@#%ing tumor (as his sister Cacky calls it), THE Kevin Elston will be that 1%!
Because we BELIEVE, we have faith, we have an amazing family, and HE has courage.
From the bottom of our hearts and souls, Kevin, myself, our children Ben & Reaghan, his beautiful Mom, brothers & sisters, our amazing nieces & nephews, and in-laws, we THANK you all….
So very much.
