Help Support Kevin Stevens Through His Cancer Journey
Hello, my name is Angela Stevens, and I’m creating this fundraiser to help my brother, Kevin Stevens, of Hutchinson, Kansas.
On July 17, Kevin went to our local ER with severe pain. On July 19, we were told that cancer was likely. The following day, his pain had increased significantly and he was having difficulty breathing, so he was transferred to Wichita for further care.
On July 21, while doctors were placing a chest tube to drain infection in his lung and to help him breathe, Kevin went into respiratory arrest and was rushed to the ICU. Thankfully, the medical team was able to drain approximately a liter of fluid from his left chest, which helped tremendously with both his breathing and his pain.
Kevin spent more than a week in the hospital, most of that time in the ICU. He is now home in Hutchinson, but his journey is far from over.
He will need daily IV infusions, frequent appointments with oncology and infectious disease specialists for a lung infection, and ongoing care for a pressure injury that developed during his hospitalization.
Our family has been working together to help Kevin through all of this and to find a new routine, but this week we learned that we are in for a marathon, not a sprint.
At this point, we don’t know if or when Kevin will be able to return to work. He has now gone a month without a paycheck. We are applying for disability, Medicaid, hospital assistance, the Cancer Council of Reno County, and other resources, but as many of you know, these processes take time.
Kevin still has several important tests ahead of him, including a PET scan, an MRI of his kidneys, a scan of his thyroid, and another CT scan of his chest. Until those are completed, his doctors won’t be able to determine the full picture or create a definitive treatment plan.
Our biggest hope and prayer right now is that the cancer is contained to his right kidney and has not spread anywhere else. We do know that he has clear cell renal cancer. We are asking for prayers, good thoughts, positive vibes, and anything else you can send his way.
We are also asking for financial help to support Kevin while we navigate this uncertain time and wait for disability and other assistance to come through. Donations will help with everyday living expenses, medical-related expenses, transportation to appointments, medications, and the many unexpected costs that come with a serious illness.
This has been incredibly difficult for Kevin. Many of you know that he spent most of his adult life working at Applied Computer Services (ACS) on B Street in Hutchinson until it closed following the owner’s passing. Since then, he has been working at Wayne’s Printing.
Kevin has always worked. He is a private and proud man who would never normally ask for help, but right now he needs his family, friends, and community to help carry him through this difficult chapter.
If you are able to donate, please know that every dollar will go directly toward supporting Kevin. If you’re unable to donate, we completely understand. Sharing this fundraiser, sending a prayer, or simply keeping Kevin in your thoughts means more to our family than you know.
Thank you for taking the time to read Kevin’s story, for supporting him, and for standing beside our family during this incredibly difficult time.
With love and gratitude,
Angela Stevens & The Stevens Family
