Hi everyone, this is Kevin.
Folks, I’m going to be honest: we’re in dire straits. Jen and I have had bills add up due to her gastroparesis treatment, and self-employment tax is a killer for 1099 contractors like me, doubly so when you‘ve built up some considerable debt due to a series of prolonged periods of underemployment.
This past year, while holding a full-time job at Mischief, I drove Uber and did some work for the LA County Election to help keep myself financially solvent and to help pay down the debt I had accured. I had a bunch of money saved up to pay off my taxes. Enter my 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid. Sometime last week, I started getting an alert about the hybrid system. I took it in, and the diagnosis was fatal. The hybrid battery was dying, and a replacement cost $6500.
At that point, the only sane option for a car that had already cost me a considerable chunk of change last year was to put her down and get a new one. We had to choose something that wasn’t going to crap out on us. Our choice was a used 2009 Toyota Rav 4. It cost $10,000.
The down payment completely wiped the money I was saving for taxes. I can’t take on any more debt. We’ve cut as much as possible out of our lives and can’t cut anything more. $5K would clear us a path forward. $10K would help us get our lives back. It would clear the debt we got to a manageable level and help us get some breathing room. Any bit helps.
Please help us get our lives back.
