Aloha, my name is Juliane and I am Keoni's mom. I am telling Keoni's story in order to let our friends and family know what Keoni has been through these past 8 months.
On May 24, 2024, Keoni was in a severe dirt bike accident in Goldbar, Washington. Alone in the mountains, Keoni stopped responding to calls from family around 6:30pm, and when he failed to touch base with anyone by 8:30pm, police and rescue teams were called. Around 11:00pm, Keoni was located unconscious by his bike. It is believed that he hit a private road gate at about 50mph and flew around 60+ft with the bike, splitting his helmet along the way. Keoni laid alone in the woods for hours until he was found.
As a result of the accident Keoni suffered a traumatic brain injury; a 3mm brain bleed and hematoma caused uncontrollable tremors on his left side. He was also unable to speak without slurring and stuttering words. Keoni was heavily sedated during his 18 days at Providence Hospital in Everett, WA. His confusion resulted in needing 24-hour nurse supervision, as well as extra support from friends and family.
Once Keoni was released from the hospital, he required 6 weeks of 24hr care from two caregivers. He was unable to complete basic tasks like showering, changing clothes, or walking without a safety belt, walker or caregiver. Keoni had daily physical, cognitive, and speech therapy appointments during this part of his recovery.
After struggling for weeks at home after his accident, Keoni was flown out to Atlanta, GA. for continued rehabilitation therapies and mental health treatment. He remained in Georgia for an additional 6 weeks of recovery.
Keoni was unable to work for almost 7 months due to his accident and therapy schedule. He has been footing the cost of trying to keep his business (Chargin Construction LLC) afloat, medical bills, personal expenses, and therapies without any income during this time. Keoni is slowly attempting to get back to work but physically and mentally cannot perform as he needs to. He is also now missing much needed therapies in order to try and keep up with his mounting expenses.
While we did not ask for help immediately after the accident, Keoni still struggles on a daily basis. My hope is that we can rally around him and ease some of the financial burden while he continues to heal. These funds will help Keoni to cover the cost of his medical bills, and the business and personal expenses that he has incurred over the last 8 months.
We appreciate all of your support, love and Aloha!
