Help Kent Recover After a Devastating Kitchen Fire

On the evening of September 20th, what started as a special dinner for Kent and his daughters quickly turned into every family’s worst nightmare. Kent wanted to make his daughters' favorite meal — homemade French fries and smash burgers. Together, they prepared everything with excitement, ready for a family dinner.

When Kent turned on the stove to heat the oil, he stepped away for just a moment to let the dogs outside. In that short time, the pot of oil caught fire. By the time he returned, flames had reached the stove and upper cabinets. Thinking quickly, Kent grabbed a fire blanket (which saved his life and his home) and managed to smother the pot, but the fire had already spread.

As he fought to contain the flames, he slipped on the grease-covered floor. The pot of hot oil spilled, covering him in burning grease. Despite being in excruciating pain, Kent’s only thought was for his family — he managed to get both daughters and their dogs safely out of the house and extinguish the remaining fire before it spread further.

Kent suffered second- and third-degree burns to his face, both forearms, hands, and legs. He was life-flighted for emergency care. He spent 14 days in Vanderbilt’s Burn Unit, where doctors completed 5 skin graft surgeries. He is now in recovery, facing a long road of healing, physical therapy, and follow-up care.

This accident has left the family emotionally and financially overwhelmed. They are currently being housed in a hotel through the month of October while the home is being repaired from smoke and fire damage. Between out-of-network medical bills, a $12,000 life flight charge, and lost wages while Kent heals, the expenses are piling up fast.

Kent is a devoted father who risked everything to protect his family and now they need our help to get through this difficult time.
