Support Ken's Costly Medical Journey

*Update 2/25/25: Still fighting! Our dad is back in hospital as of today, due to still having pneumonia, despite having finished his antibiotics. He is still struggling with complications of the illness, with trouble breathing, edema, afib, and fluid in the lungs. As of now, we are not sure of the course of treatment, but he is in the place to get the support he needs, even though he is very done with touring hospitals. Please continue the support and prayers. Reach out to any of us kids with questions.
*Update 2/18/25: They made it home last night from Mexico! It is not to say however that his journey to health and wellness is over, but at least it is continuing at home. Today he saw his primary doctor to go over what had happened, where he is now, and what are the next steps. Our parents are overwhelmed by the care and support coming their way, and it has definitely got them home and has supported their mental wellbeing. They are so grateful! In addition, they will continue to have to figure out how to manage the medical debt and other related challenges to unwind. Please continue to share our page and support them however you can! Thank you all!

Our wonderful father Ken is currently in a Mexican hospital after what was meant to be a relaxing getaway turned into a medical emergency. Despite having recently started treatment for newly diagnosed myeloma and amyloidosis, his doctors had cleared him for travel, encouraging him to enjoy life while managing his conditions.

Shortly after arriving in Mexico on January 30th, Ken developed what seemed like cold symptoms. His condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to hospitalization on February 10th. He was diagnosed with H1N1 flu which developed into pneumonia, triggering acute heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and kidney complications. He's currently in ICU on oxygen support, with his heart function reduced to 40%. Thankfully, he is improving.

The most pressing challenge we face is that while Ken has insurance through UCare, no hospitals in Mexico accept this coverage. This means our parents must pay approximately $7,000-$10,000 daily out-of-pocket for his care, with hopes of future reimbursement. They're quickly depleting their savings and maxing out credit cards to keep him in treatment.

Additional Context:
-As you know, our mom relies heavily on dad due to her macular degeneration, which has left her unable to drive for the past four years
-As a small business owner, Ken doesn't earn income when he's not working, creating additional financial strain
-There’s also an added complexity facing significant costs for translating medical documents into English for insurance purposes

The funds raised will primarily go toward:
-Current hospital bills and ongoing medical expenses
-Translation of medical documents for insurance claims

Any amount you can contribute will help alleviate the tremendous financial burden on our family during this medical crisis. We're grateful for your support in helping bring our dad home and getting him the care he needs.
