What started as a routine back surgery in February 2026 quickly turned into a life-threatening fight for survival. My stepfather, Kenny, underwent back surgery and spent several days in the hospital recovering before being released to go home. Just two days later, he was rushed back to WakeMed due to kidney failure, resulting in another week-long hospital stay. After being released again, he seemed to be improving. However, complications with getting him back on his blood pressure medication caused his condition to worsen. An MRI revealed bleeding on his brain, which rapidly progressed. Kenny was airlifted to Cape Fear ICU, where he underwent emergency surgery to relieve the bleeding that had developed into clots. This has been a long, emotional, and exhausting journey for our family. Because of these unexpected medical setbacks, both Kenny and my mother have been unable to return to work as planned. My mother has been by his side every step of the way, serving as his full-time caregiver. Between extended hospital stays, travel, and daily expenses, the financial strain has become overwhelming.
