Support Kenia - A Community Champion

Kenia is a fearless, passionate advocate for people. She fights hard and is tireless in her pursuit of equity and justice. She's so strong, but no one should have to be as strong as she has had to be in 2020.

Kenia recently lost her mom to COVID-19. Losing your mom is a devastating loss to anyone. But Kenia also recently became a full time caregiver to her mom. With all the responsibilities and burdens that comes with, she cared for her mom when she fell ill, had multiple hospitalizations and heart stents implanted in March. She became a nurse to her mom. Then her mom contracted COVID-19 in her immonocompromised condition and had to hospitalized for a final time.

Sadly, Kenia had also contracted COVID-19 at the same time and was very sick and struggling to breathe. As she began to slowly recover, she still has to self-isolate and was still unable to see her mom. Her mom fought hard, but ultimately lost her fight and Kenia never got to see her. Her mom was on a ventilator for several days before she passed, so she couldn't speak and Kenia never got to say goodbye.

As if the loss of her mom wasn't enough, Kenia has had more loss this year. She lost her job in January. After searching for a few months, she finally found a job in her profession, mental health. She worked there a short time before contracting the virus and understandably went on unpaid leave. This past weekend ended her quarantine and she was set to resume work on Monday 4/20. But she received a call late last week that they were laying her off. She did go to work on Monday. But only to collect her belongings. Unemployment checks are in the distant future.

How will she pay rent now?
How will she eat?

She has her mother's funeral plans and expenses to deal with. As well as her own living expenses and an uncertain living situation.
She has no job. She hasn't had health insurance since January - let's pray she doesn't receive any surprise medical bills.

Kenia has given so much of herself to be a fierce advocate for us. We need to be there to support her through this unimaginably difficult time.  Our beloved Cuban Qween Kenia.
