Hello everyone. My name is Kemal Gaye, and I’m a recent graduate from Middlebury College. On August 1st, 2025, I moved to Taiwan to begin my Fulbright Grant as an English Teaching Assistant. So far, my time here has been everything I hoped for. I’ve had the privilege of working with wonderful students in Chiayi County and making friends with some truly remarkable people all across the island.
On October 29th at 8 PM, while driving to a school event, I was hit by a speeding scooter. My scooter was severely damaged, and I suffered a tibia plateau fracture. I had to undergo emergency surgery to repair the damage to my knee. It’s been an exhausting and traumatic experience so far, with recovery only just beginning. Although my public insurance has covered substantial surgery costs, the accident has still left a significant financial burden on my family. We have to pay out of pocket for the surgical plates placed in my knee as well as a knee brace. We will also need to pay for physical therapy and legal fees for mediation with the other person in the accident.
Any financial contribution will go a very long way. This is turning out to be the most difficult time of my life, and I’ll be infinitely grateful for whatever help I can receive.
