Support Kelsey Miller's Battle Against Breast Cancer

My name is Hope Hughes. My husband Ryan and I are raising funds for Ryan's younger sister, Kelsey Miller, in efforts to support her and her family as she combats breast cancer.

Unfortunately, this is not the first encounter with cancer this family has experienced. Kelsey and Ryan’s mother Polly Hughes passed away in 2010 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. In 2015, Ryan underwent surgery and chemotherapy after he received his own cancer diagnosis, and is celebrating ten years cancer-free this year. Kelsey’s diagnosis came after a visit to her primary care physician, one that was not initially of major concern, but rather an effort to remain proactive in consideration of her family history. She was then referred for a series of ultrasounds, biopsies, and MRIs that came with shocking results – Kelsey had breast cancer, and would need to be seen by an oncologist to determine what the next steps would be.

After advocating tirelessly on her own behalf, Kelsey met with a team of specialists at Dana Farber in Boston, MA. A date was set for a full mastectomy, which she underwent in early December – and thankfully the surgery occurred when it did, as another tumor was located during the procedure that had not been present on prior scans. Despite the surgery’s successful outcome, her doctors determined that she would need to go through chemotherapy as well in order to properly wage a full-fledged attack on the cancer, in hopes to prevent any further spread to other sites in her body. Once her chemo infusions are completed, she will be undergoing targeted cell therapy treatment, & then will receive endocrine therapy for the next 5+ years. We hope with these medical interventions, she will be free of this disease that has already taken so much from her and her family… and she can emerge from this tumultuous time period in victory.

One of the challenges she faces, and that so many cancer patients face aside from the major obstacle of fighting cancer itself… is the added stress of being able to conquer the resulting expenses. Many aspects of Kelsey's treatment have resulted in financial hardship such as procedures and supplies not covered by health insurance, and costs associated with day to day care and transportation to and from Boston, which are 2-3 hour commutes each way. Her wonderful husband Bryan has remained an unwavering source of love and support, taking care of his wife at every step, along with Kelsey’s father, who hasn’t left his daughter’s side… and while family and friends have stepped in and rallied behind Kelsey wherever & however they can, the reality is that bills cannot be placed on pause until treatment is over.

With Kelsey having always been the person to effortlessly give all that she has for her family, her friends, the many children that have passed through her classroom, and countless others… for anyone that knows her, she wages war against her own obstacles in silence. We put together this GoFundMe in an attempt to advocate on her behalf during one of the hardest times in her life. Every dollar raised will go towards her continued treatment and to assist in eliminating some of the medical bills that have begun to accumulate, so she can continue to focus on her health and being a doting and present mother to her sweet two-year-old boy.
