Last year, my dear friend Kelly began having vision issues and, after visiting the emergency room, was diagnosed with an aneurysm behind her brain and malignant melanoma in her right eye which requires removal and a prosthetic. If that wasn't enough, pre-cancerous growths in her uterus requiring a hysterectomy have also been uncovered.

Kelly’s health insurance leaves her with significant out-of-pocket costs. She needs $7,000 for her upcoming eye surgery, plus follow-up procedures. The prosthetic eye will cost around $8,000, the aneurysm surgery is $50,000, and the hysterectomy could exceed $25,000. As a self-employed person, she’ll have no income during recovery. The total costs may exceed $100,000.
