My name is Abe Brennan, and this is a fundraiser for one of my longest-standing friends, Kelly Mickelson. Many of you know him and love him. After a long rigmarole with the health care system that took months, he's been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He is supposed to start treatment soon. He hasn't been able to work for almost a year, though, and he needs help. He's felt uncomfortable asking for it, and I don't blame him, but no one should have to feel bad about trying to take care of themselves. The for-profit healthcare apparatus in this country is evil. And things are more uncertain with recent legislation. GoFundMe has become the social safety net that the state should be providing. Our system privatizes profit and socializes costs. It's not how it should be, but that's how it is. Kelly is a devoted father, dear friend, awesome musician, and consummate sound engineer. He played in the bands Goodbye Harry, Portrait of Poverty, and The Fucking Eagles, among others. I've known him for almost 40 years. He's a Tacoma, WA, institution. Until we can change this twisted system, we all need to help one another. I'm not rich, but I'm going to kick this thing off with $200.
