Hello! My name is Kelly. My husband, Ryan, and I went on our honeymoon to St. Kitts & Nevis. On our second day on the island, we found this sweet girl hiding in the bushes. We spent the night petting her and cleaning her up a bit. We named her Laila. She was so skinny, the next day we went to the store and picked up dog food for her. When we set the bowl of dog food down, she ate it so fast you could tell she hadn’t had a good meal in a while. Over the next couple of days, we started a routine of giving her breakfast, lunch, dinner, and lots of love. She started sleeping on our doormat outside our door. She would stay there all night, and anytime we left during the day, we would find her there when we got home. When we would hangout on the beach, she would spend the whole day with us there, laying on the lounge chairs and cuddling. We quickly fell in love with this sweet girl.
We took her to the local vet on Nevis, and she got a clean bill of health. There is no shelter on Nevis, and the vet doesn’t have the space to hold stray dogs, so they are unable to take her in.
By day two, I was already researching ways to bring her home with us. As it turns out, it is very difficult to get a dog her size on a plane and off the island. I talked with multiple people at American Airlines, and they were no real help. She is too large to be a carry-on pet, and they don’t let anyone but American Military check pets on the flight. I checked with American Pet Cargo, and they don’t fly off St. Kitts & Nevis. The closest island is Saint Maarten, and it’s difficult to find a way to get here even there.
The only real way to get her back to Utah with us, is to hire a Pet Transport Service. I reached out to a couple of businesses, and the starting cost for transporting her is $5,000, but most
likely much more. So that’s why we are making this GoFundMe. We would love more than anything to bring this sweet girl home with us, and give her the forever home she deserves.
