Support Keli's Recovery from Guillain-Barré
Donation protected
Our friend, Keli Nelson, is bravely fighting the devastating effects of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system, the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. It causes a rapid onset of muscle weakness due to the immune system damaging the peripheral nervous system. The medical bills from her hospitalization, as well as the costs of her rehabilitation, are staggering. We are hoping to raise funds to help with some of the medical bills.
Keli has fought through four bouts of cancer in a 9-year period, with the last occurrence being in 2019. Keli has also had two total knee replacement surgeries and bilateral hips and shoulder surgeries in 2022, 2023, and 2025. After her most recent shoulder surgery in January of 2025, she suddenly lost use of her legs and arms, which was eventually diagnosed as Guillain-Barré Syndrome. She spent a week in the Intensive Care Unit, receiving six treatments of plasmapheresis while intubated to help her breathe. After eight days in the ICU and four additional days in another area of the hospital, she was released to a post-acute rehabilitation facility to begin a slow and painful recovery.
The doctors are optimistic that she will recover, but how far she recovers and how long that recovery may take is unknown. Her current rehabilitation costs exceed $200 a day, and the costs will increase when she is placed into a group home for long-term care. This is a big financial burden for Keli. The stress and anxiety sap the physical, emotional, and mental strength she needs to focus on recovery.
Keli Nelson is a positive, warm, and caring person. We are honored to be her friends and surrogate family. She is kind, funny, and helpful. She has done charitable work with the Humane Society and the Phoenix Children's Hospital and is eager to complete her recovery so she can get back to working with animals and children. We are seeking your help in this endeavor. We truly appreciate your time, your prayers, and your support.
Thank you,
Doug, Bill, and Pam
