Dear friends of Keith,
My name is Camilla Norman Field, and I'm a member of Phillips Exeter Academy's Class of 1993. I first met Keith Humphrey when I was a new Lower. He then worked as a groundskeeper, making every effort to improve our lives, building our E/A bonfire, and ensuring our sports fields were ready for play, among other tasks. More importantly, Keith served as a mentor, ambassador, and friend to me, as well as to many others, during his 38-year tenure at the Academy.
Our initial connection turned into a lifelong friendship; he's always the one person I sought out when visiting Exeter. When our elder son was at the Academy (graduating this past spring), Keith was integral to his experience there, and even the subject of his college essay, illustrating how Keith's way of interacting with others — whether friend or stranger — taught him about the value of kindness and inclusivity. Keith has modeled to all who have had the pleasure of knowing him the importance of being positive, even when (especially when!) life brings its inevitable challenges.
Onto the GoFundMe!
After many decades as a groundskeeper, Keith suffered a terrible injury while at work that, combined with his Type One diabetes, made it impossible for him to continue in that role. Not wanting to leave his Exeter community, he started working part-time at the Dining Hall, nourishing students, faculty, and staff with food, along with his good cheer and positive attitude.
Unfortunately, Keith lost his job at the end of this most recent school year, which was unexpected (he was hoping to make it to 40 years!). His Type One diabetes has rendered him legally blind, making it impossible for him to find alternative employment, especially as he's trying to preserve what little sight remains in his one good eye. This GoFundMe campaign is designed to support Keith, covering basic expenses and growing healthcare costs.
Thank you in advance for any gift of any size in support of someone who has given so much to so many of us!
