My beautiful, loving, hysterically funny sister, Kay, has been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in the lower palate of her mouth. The good news, the doctors tell her that as long as is localized, it should be 100% curable. The bad news, this is going to be a long, ugly and expensive road. Major surgery, with at least 1 week in the hospital, followed by 6 weeks of radiation then reconstructive surgery, speech and occupational therapy to learn how to speak again and possibly dental reconstruction. Working with a fixed income, and always the healthy one in the family, she did not have insurance when this diagnosis came along. We are still not sure what the actual costs are going to be, but they will not be small. Surgery will be in Charleston - they live outside of Myrtle Beach, so travel and hotel costs will also be part of the process. If you know my sister, you know that she is not one to ask for help, she is always the helper. She would also kill me if I put on a pressure campaign, so if you feel motivated, and are able, any and all donations would be appreciated.
