As we all know, Kayla is a warrior. Additionally, She's an Airforce Vet and mother of two. Part of what that entails for her is showing us all of her progress, but fighting her battles in silence. Since her surgeries in November 2020, she has been battling increasingly bad neuropathic pain from her tumor encroaching on her trigeminal and optic nerves. The pain has gotten so bad that she was recently hospitalized, only to find out that no medicines are going to help the pain.
The University of Maryland Medical Center recently hired a new neurosurgeon who specializes in Kayla’s specific type of tumor and he feels confident that he can perform another surgery to help alleviate some of her pain. This is a miracle because we previously thought further surgeries were not an option, and we have run out of other options for pain control.
They will once again be breaking the surgery up into two days and they will be happening rather emergently, hopefully in the next month. There are a number of doctors she still needs to see so that everyone can come together to make the best, safest plan for the most benefit.
Kayla will be requiring a lot of help over the next several months. Luckily, we learned a lot last time about what she needs as well as what we all need to help her the best we can.
What the core group of us need most are the funds to be able to help her to the best of our ability. We need to purchase plane tickets, DoorDash meals at the hospital, and take time off of work.
We don’t know what to expect in the aftermath of this surgery. Last time they chose the safest path to the tumor and she still ended up half paralyzed. This time it is riskier but it’s what needs to be done to give her back any quality of life. Anything you can give will be greatly appreciated!
