Support Kayla and Koa: Fund Surgery Costs

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Alyssa Clements. I started this fundraiser on behalf of my sister, Kayla. She’s 19, works full-time & just found out her sweet fur baby is needing a major surgery. Let me give you a little backstory..

About 2 years ago, she was scrolling on Facebook & came across an aussie mix. The post stated that they were looking for a rescue for him & my sister would say it was almost love at first sight. Kayla & I drove about 3 & a half hours away to West Monroe, Louisiana to meet the sweet baby himself. That’s when I knew it was truly love at first sight. He was & still is the sweetest baby. He was so gentle & welcoming. Two years ago they met & they haven’t been separated since. I like to tell people that they were like a match made in heaven. He struggles with separation anxiety & Kayla has a history of certain mental health issues as well. They make the perfect duo. He was her saving grace as i’m sure she was was for him as well.

Saturday, February 22nd, an accident occurred. Koa was going to get under her bed as he usually does, we all know that as his safe space. While he was going to go under, my sister rolled her vanity chair & went over his back foot. He yelped & whined for alot longer than dog normally would for something minor. Since then, he hasn’t been able to walk. Sunday night, February 23rd, with the help of a few donors who we will forever be grateful for, we brought him into the emergency vet where he was examined & x-rays were done. To both of our surprise, the issue was alot worse than we could’ve ever imagined. The vet explained that both of his hip joints were dislocated. She believes that this may have been something he was born with due to the shape of his hip sockets (i’m sorry if i’m using the wrong terminology). She stated that the accident with her chair could have agitated it. Maybe pinched a nerve, caused him some pain in his back. He was sent home with pain meds as well as anti-inflammatory meds. He is unable to walk & she advised that we give him a few days on the medication to see if it would help.

My sister has tried applying for Care Credit & Scratch Pay for him. She was denied for both. I tried to fill out an application for grants from a few options we were given. Those were also a no go. One stated “the illness, injury, or disease you selected does not meet qualifications for a grant, and we are unable to provide grants for treatment that has already taken place” which treatment has not been done.

I am coming to whoever reads this with a grateful yet heavy heart. My sister is completely heartbroken. The last thing she wants is to have to surrender him due to the lack of financial support. Koa has been there for her through everything & the most important being our grandmother’s passing. Koa is like a child to her & as a mother, there is no greater pain than seeing your baby hurting.

Please donate if you can. If you can’t donate to help, please help by praying that she is able to get the help that she so desperately needs for her sweet fur baby. Our hope is by the grace of God, she can make this happen for Koa.

Thank you to everyone, we are eternally grateful♥️

****UPDATE & DISCLAIMER****
He was brought into Capital Area Veterinary Specialist. The surgeon we met with, Dr. John Mauterer, was the sweetest & explained everything EXTREMELY well. For now, we will be keeping him on medication for a month to see if it will help rather than jumping into surgery. Dr. Mauterer is unsure how he will progress over the next month BUT we came to a mutual agreement to try medication first before jumping into a surgery that we do not have the funds for. SURGERY IS STILL A STRONG POSSIBILITY!

I’m keeping the Go Fund Me open but I do want to let everyone know, we have been working with Mardi Paws. They have helped & covered every vet bill including his medication & visit to the specialist. If he ends up not needing the surgery, all proceeds will be used to reimburse Mardi Paws.
