Hello all, my name is Kaya, I am a first-generation college student looking to continue my education as I hope to start at an Art Therapy program this coming Fall 2026.
Similar to the application process, I want to outline to you all why seeking an education means to me.
Art has always been an avenue through which I can best express myself. Sometimes the words were hard to find or even too painful to say, visual expression, bright colors, and bold choices allowed me to communicate when, how, and when I needed. I see art as a cross- cultural tool. It can be used and understood by many people, transcending written and verbal communication. I see, feel, and use art to create change.
When I reflect on my involvement in social justice movements, I think of the art I have created to amplify my voice as a multiracial, queer, Jewish woman, as well as the education and work that have allowed me to make a small but meaningful contribution to social justice activism in higher education. I hope that earning a degree from an institution that prioritizes social justice will allow me to build meaningful connections and learn alongside individuals and institutions committed to change.
The strengths I bring to the learning community are reflected in the goals I hope to accomplish during the program. Three main goals are as follows:
Art for Social Change — During my undergraduate studies, I served on the Art for Social Justice committee, participated in ASC research, and was a co-author on Art for Social Change: Aligning Values and Actions Toward Effective Activism (Andrus, M., et al., 2024). I hope to rejoin the committee and help plan public events that highlight the power of art therapy.
Research — While my long-term career goals are not research-focused, participating in research has allowed me to stay informed about emerging findings. I plan to pursue projects that center LGBTQIA+ individuals and promote leadership and mentorship in healing spaces.
Giving to the Community — I hope to volunteer in retirement homes, hospitals, and nonprofit organizations such as CHAP and Color Outside the Lines, facilitating art-making with clients.
Continuing my education means gaining the knowledge and experience I need to complete over clinical/clerical 1000hrs and to take the practical exams to become a board-certified Art Therpist. I want to be one of the many therapists helping create positive change in folks ready to receive the care they need and want. I want to be an advocate for those who might not see how, or know why, or feel worthy enough, to fight for themselves and the care they need and rightfully deserve.
I am reaching out for support as I take this next big step in my life. After years of hard work and dedication, I am excited to pursue my passion and help others through art, but the financial demands of grad school are significant. I will need help covering tuition, books, and gas costs, as I recently became a used car owner to commute to classes.
Your support will make a real difference for me. Every donation, no matter the size, will go directly toward my education and the resources I need to succeed. Because I won’t be able to work full-time while attending the program, your help will relieve a lot of financial stress and allow me to focus on my studies and future career.
I am so grateful for your kindness and generosity. Thank you for believing in me and helping me reach my goals. With your support, I can make the most of this opportunity and give back to others through my work as an art therapist.
Please feel free to message me if you have any questions!
